Since the first cases were detected at the end of 2019, the coronavirus (or Covid-19) is now present in more than 158 countries and territories, with more than 171,115 confirmed cases. While China, South Korea, Japan, Iran and Italy are amongst those most heavily affected, the infection has also affected the UK, US, Australia, France and many more.

The World Health Organisation called a pandemic on 11 March after the number of cases outside of China increased 13-fold in two weeks. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Chief, said he was “deeply concerned” by “alarming levels of inaction”.

Following concerns surrounding the spread of COVID-19, many sports, entertainment and political events have been cancelled across the globe. Some countries, including Italy, have gone into complete lockdown, only allowing residents to break self-isolation for essential activities.

In the UK, Scotland has enforced advice to ban mass gatherings above 500 people and this is set to be enforced across the rest of the UK in the coming weeks.

How the coronavirus could affect you
If your event has been cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns, you will need to check the small print of your policy to find out if you’re covered. Event cancellation policies are often complex and contain a number of exclusions you might not have anticipated; if anything is unclear – ensure to contact your insurer or insurance broker. This will likely be affected by whether you choose to cancel the event or whether you were forced to due to government-imposed restrictions.

If you were due to attend an event and have already invested major capital in preparation, if the event is cancelled, you may be able to claim these funds back depending on your policy wording.
