Fuel saving tips

With constantly fluctuating fuel prices, getting the most miles out of every tank has never been so important. Here are some of our top tips to keep you on the road and out of the petrol stations for longer:
1. Check your tyres
Low tyre pressures increase the drag on your car, meaning you will use more fuel, so regularly check your tyre pressure is at the correct level.
2. Turn off your air con
Air conditioning will also increase your fuel consumption, so make sure you turn it off unless you really need it. It’s more efficient to drive with the windows down and the air con off at lower speeds, but at higher speeds it's better to use the air con and windows up.
3. Don’t leave the engine running
If you get stuck in a queue or are waiting to pick someone up, turn the engine off, if it looks like you could be waiting for 3 minutes or more.
4. Use your gears
Always drive in the highest gear possible without labouring the engine. Try to change up at around 2,000 rpm in a diesel car or around 2,500 rpm in a petrol car.
5. Stick to speed limits
The faster you go, the greater the fuel consumption and more pollution you will create. Driving at 70mph uses up to 9% more fuel than at 60mph and up to 15% more than at 50mph. Cruising at 80mph can use up to 25% more fuel than at 70mph not to mention the legal repercussions.
6. De-clutter
The lighter your car is, the less effort is needed to accelerate. By de-cluttering, clearing out junk from the boot, and not carrying unnecessary weight, you can save more.
