Sport and Leisure – Winter Care

Posted on Nov 04, 2021

By its very nature, sport is unpredictable. Anything can happen - that’s why we love it so much. But now the daylight hours are shorter and with the potential for unpredictable weather greater, risk identification, control and management can be increasingly challenging at this time of year.

The following checklist, albeit not exhaustive, is a good place to start when keeping your facility safe this winter.

  • Speak to all the key people who are going to be involved in club activities to help you identify any significant health and safety issues and what to do about them.

  • Check with your sport/activity National Governing Body (NGB) to see if they have any advice or documentation specific to your discipline.

  • Ensure that playing surfaces are in a good state of repair and fit for purpose prior to activity.
  • Take steps to reduce the risk of injury by making sure paths are cleared of ice, snow, leaves etc. and safe to walk on.

  • Keep walkways free from slip and trip hazards.

  • Make sure there is adequate lighting throughout the facility, from playing surfaces to car parks, signage and walkways.

  • Check the sports equipment you provide and / or have control over is safe to use (store equipment safely when not in use).

  • Deal with any catering related risks eg the use of hot surfaces, in a sensible way and always train staff appropriately.

  • Have a plan for what to do if there is an emergency or something not going according to plan eg because of extreme and sudden bad weather – are contingency plans in place with the appropriate appointed persons trained and aware of their role.

  • Have a means of raising the alarm if there is an emergency and everyone knows about the emergency arrangements. Ensure that emergency vehicles can gain access to your venue.

  • Have adequately trained first-aiders available at all time.

For all risk management and insurance requirements, Watkin Davies are the appointed insurance partners to the WSA and work with a large number of their members and clubs.
